When you foster a dog bred for the armed forces, a number of puppy meetings are included, where a lot of information is given out about the puppies' expected development, where they are tested in somewhat simple ways to see how said development goes, and of course you have the opportunity to ask the forage consultant every stupid question you can think of. Very handy.
At some point was told about the so-called ghost age; the one when the puppies suddenly realize that they are afraid of everything. Trash cans, stumps, bicycles – you name it. Much to my disappointment, Ella never entered the ghost age, but she kind of just continued to be rock tough. If she ever showed any sign of being thoughtful or nervous about anything we saw in the distance, we immediately went there so she could look and smell and see that there was nothing dangerous.
Boyo, However, has since a couple of days started to show some signs that the world is full of big ones, scary and also dangerous things. Especially dangerous things. Most recently, a couple of hours ago when we were out, he saw a road sign on the hill – and staggered. He really put all four paws on the hill and leaned back not to go forward when I pulled on the leash.
It was quite incredibly hard to keep from laughing when I realized why he refused to move forward. I'm a bit nasty and mean in that way. And because I don't want my dog to be a coward, so I insisted that we go ahead and take a look at that road sign. With a candy, it went perfectly, and we got through the whole process without any problems whatsoever.
It's like now the fun begins, so for real, I feel. The one of all, the roughest period with room cleanliness is more or less over – today is the first day I haven't worn shoes indoors in a couple of months (because I started practicing it even before I picked up Boyo). So I can start focusing on other things – such as dealing with this ghost age thing. Not to mention focusing on teaching him some things he needs to know, know and understand.
Then it begins also feel like shit, how fast it goes. We're already more or less past this room cleanliness thing, and he is only about three and a half months (hardly). It will go fast, this first year. It is important to take the opportunity to enjoy this time, because it is the one that goes by the fastest. He is already so much bigger than when I picked him up.
So I intend to take seize the opportunity and amuse myself like a queen at his expense, when he is ridiculous and silly. I'm also going to make sure it doesn't become permanent, but if he's silly, I think I'll laugh out loud if I feel like it. It's just too much fun to pass up.
