Don't be afraid

To at least partially continue on the previous post's theme – to learn from other people's dogs, I thought I would now address the phenomenon of being afraid of one's own dog. It may sound wacky and, on the whole, unlikely, but the fact is that there are people who are afraid of their own dogs.

Now I think maybe not that it's very common, but one of the dogs I mentioned in yesterday's post has this problem. One of the people has told us that he is not necessarily afraid of the dog itself, but for what the dog can accomplish against others.

Between dog and human beings have miles of empty space that needs to be filled with leadership.

I have never during all my years together with Ella, been afraid of her. I've never had a reason. Partly because she would never bring herself to hurt me personally, partly because I have learned to cancel a negative, destructive behavior before it becomes unmanageable.

There is at least a couple of aspects of this I think are worth addressing.

One of them is the simple fact that what we are talking about here is own dog. For me, it feels completely unthinkable that I would be afraid of my own dog. It's my dog – How can I be afraid of it??

The other one the aspect is that as long as you are active and preventive in your leadership, situations where you become afraid of your own dog should not have to arise.

Now does not mean this that I advocate foolhardiness. After all, we are dealing with animals, and animals react to instinct to a much higher degree than we humans. Therefore, it is important to have respect for our dogs and the harm they do able to achieve – but also to prevent as much as possible so that our dogs do not have to act on their reactions if they become too strong.

I say that I have never been afraid of my own dog, and I don't have that. On the other hand, it has happened on countless occasions that I have been ashamed of her, because she is so energetic, poised and intense that it's easy (for others) to perceive her as ill-mannered. But you should remember that there is a big difference between being afraid of, respect your dog for what it is, and to be ashamed of a behavior.

……..

Until then – have a nice day and be a clear leader for your dog! ♥
